Love Is All - Even When Traveling in an RV

The Albatross
The Albatross

On a frigid morning after Thanksgiving, we loaded our RV and headed for refuge from the bitter Nebraska winters. Snowflakes coated the windshield as we hitched up the car and headed south. Our two corgis were in heaven in their fur coats, but my husband and I shivered as the RV, lovingly christened The Albatross, took forever to warm up.

We are blessed to have the means to travel in our retirement, but sometimes this 36 foot home on wheels gets a little small and has untold issues. That’s where love and patience come in.  The “untold issues” are the foundation of the name for our traveling abode.

As everyone who owns an RV knows, there are problems when you take your vehicle on a long journey. From the small Class C to the huge Class A, no matter the cost, there are endless kinks that need to be worked out.

Our “kinks” included slide-outs that wouldn’t slide back in. Drawers that wouldn’t stay closed. In the bathroom, leaky faucets and shower. Electrical outages that shut down everything. An air conditioner that conked out in 100 plus heat. Shades that went down but wouldn’t go back up. We bungy corded them up and felt like the Beverly Hillbillies as we pulled into our next stop. The list goes on. Every single time we go on a trip, something happens.

An albatross is a bird, of course, and a golf term, but Merriam-Webster’s second definition fits our RV: “something that causes persistent deep concern or anxiety: something that greatly hinders accomplishment: encumbrance.” Despite many “encumbrances,” we have persevered in our travels. Love continues to keep us going. Reaching our destinations.

What will The Albatross have in store to "hinder" us as we travel this time? Stay tuned. Remember, love is all.
