Did you know that this section of New Orleans is the oldest? Did you know that it is also called Vieux Carré, which means “Old Square”? I believe that the history of “The Big Easy” is one of the most unique in the United States. Here are some links that help you stroll vicariously through this wonderful city:
A wonderful site with a brief history of the French Quarter and more.
Another great site to learn the history including “stories of trade, pirates, voodoo, and even vampires.”
Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville founded the city in 1718. The architecture is timeless with bright colors, shuttered windows, and wrought-iron railing.

During our visit, the Quarter was undergoing a massive facelift as the city prepared for the 2025 Super Bowl. New black-top surfaces, fresh signage, and festive façades appeared through the annoyance of street closures and construction noise. But as we entered Jackson Square, we were surprised to see the door of St Louis Cathedral opened wide for visitors. They had been closed during our last visit right after the pandemic.
And a stroll through the French Market is a must along with beignets and chicory coffee!
