Amid several other plantations dotting the levee along the Mississippi River, Oak Alley Plantation was our choice during this trip to New Orleans. Situated in Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana, the antebellum home reflected the grandeur of Georgian Architecture at its finest.
It was well worth the hour and a half drive to see the 28 mighty oak trees lining the avenue leading to the front door of thee home. There were 28 corresponding Doric columns surrounding the home and support a true “wrap around” wide porch. The view from each side of the home was breathtaking.
Our tour guide was knowledgeable and shared a balanced view of the history of the plantation. The human costs and the subsequent generations who worked together to present “the good, the bad, and the ugly” that transpired on these beautifully landscaped grounds. In fact, our guide was a descendent of one of the original slaves on the property.
Sobering insights into a history that has been diligently curated to help us learn from the past. Love truly should be at the center of our lives, no matter our station. Love should always be all.
